Framework — AI Level Matrix (TAB)

AI Level Matrix

TAB FrameworkThinking × AI Skills × Business Skills · Three-Axis Framework

A three-axis framework that defines AI productivity as T × A × B (Thinking × AI Skills × Business Skills — multiplicative model).
It measures not which tools are used, but whether AI Skills (A) are being applied as an extension of Thinking (T) — the pivotal distinction for the AI era. HAiiA certification standard v4.0.

T軸 T1–T8T-axis T1–T8 × A軸 A1–A8A-axis A1–A8 × B軸 B1–B8B-axis B1–B8 = AI生産性 T×A×BAI Productivity T×A×B

Most people see AI as a handy tool that saves time. But there's a real difference between people who stop there and people who feel their whole way of thinking has shifted. The TAB Framework measures that difference across three axes: Thinking (T), AI Skills (A), and Business Knowledge (B). The key is that they multiply together — if any one of them is near zero, the whole product collapses too.

The pivotal question of AI fluency is whether AI Skills (A) are being used as an extension of Business efficiency (B), or as an extension of Thinking (T). The former makes work faster; the latter transforms the quality of thought. AI productivity = T × A × B (multiplicative) — any axis approaching zero collapses the whole. The TAB Framework makes this structure legible. Finalised as v4.0 (HAiiA certification standard) after multi-perspective review covering educational engineering, the SFIA framework, psychology, AI governance and behavioural economics.

The central question in TAB is one of subordination: to which axis does A ultimately serve? A subordinated to B (AI as accelerant) produces linear productivity gains and nothing more. A subordinated to T (AI as cognitive scaffold) opens a different register — legible as an implementation of extended mind theory (Clark & Chalmers, 1998), where the boundary of cognition is redistributed outward. The multiplicative model carries a strong systemic implication: T, A, and B are not independently additive capacities but are coupled such that deficiency in any one invalidates the others. Methodologically, the B-axis draws on SFIA's depth structure (Levels 1–7), and metacognitive monitoring — as theorised in cognitive science — functions as a secondary lens for B-axis calibration.

それがB1(まだわからない)からB8(完全に評価できる)までの段階です。 What does the B-axis actually measure? It's not whether you can do the job yourself — it's whether you can judge whether AI did it well. If you have no knowledge of finance, you can't tell if the financial report AI generated is right or wrong. That gap runs from B1 (can't evaluate) to B8 (can evaluate fully). Using AI well means growing your domain knowledge alongside your AI skills.

B-axis design: The B-axis draws on the depth structure of the SFIA framework (originating in the UK, adopted in ~200 countries): "know → can do → can design → can define." Its distinctive point is that it measures not whether you can do it, but whether you can evaluate what AI did. The depth at which you can judge the quality of AI-produced deliverables is what the B-axis truly measures.

The epistemic position of the B-axis: The B-axis measures not performance capacity but evaluative capacity — metacognitive judgment at a higher order of abstraction. While drawing on SFIA's depth structure (knowledge → application → design → definition), B-axis in TAB is distinctive in centering the evaluator position: can you assess the quality of what AI produced? This connects to Polanyi's tacit knowledge: experts hold judgment criteria they cannot fully articulate, and those criteria are precisely what allow them to detect error or inappropriateness in AI outputs. The converse — high A with low B — produces a specific failure mode: competent-seeming ignorance, where error passes undetected. That asymmetric risk is the core reason B was included as a first-class axis rather than a modifier.

(T × A)AI Level Matrix (T × A)
T × A · Click each cell for detail · B-axis shown above

This grid maps combinations of Thinking (T) and AI Skills (A). Find where you sit right now. The diagonal running from bottom-left to top-right is the most balanced zone. The bottom-right (high AI skills, low Thinking) is a caution zone. Click any cell to read a description of that type.

The matrix maps the intersection of the T-axis (Thinking) and the A-axis (AI Skills); the B-axis is shown in the scale definitions above. Click any cell to reveal the archetype's definition and its zone. The diagonal (T = A) marks the most balanced state. The red band indicates Risk A — tech over-confidence (high A, low T). The amber band marks AI-dependency tendency. The green band marks the upper-integration zone.

The matrix is legible as a phase diagram of the T×A space. The diagonal (T = A) is the dynamic equilibrium line; deviations from it indicate systemic distortion. The high-A, low-T region (lower-right) represents not merely "tech over-confidence" but a state of cognitive imbalance — where tool capability becomes the anchor for self-assessment and cognitive offloading accelerates unchecked. High-T, low-A (upper-left) is simply unactivated latent capacity. The two risks are asymmetric: the former tends to make error invisible; the latter is opportunity cost only. Discontinuities in the scale (e.g. T5→T6) mark phase transitions in cognitive mode rather than incremental skill accumulation — a distinction with significant implications for assessment design.

Three Core Principles
Principle 01

What matters is not what, but how

The fact that you used AI to write meeting notes doesn't tell us your level. Someone who copy-pasted the output unchanged and someone who shaped it with their own thinking are at completely different levels. What matters is how your thinking changed after using it.

The same "minute-taking" can be A2×T2 or A5×T4. The use case does not determine the level. What does is how you used it, and how your thinking and work shifted afterwards.

Use-case taxonomies capture surface behavior, not cognitive process. For the same task, treating AI as an input-output pipe versus treating it as a dialogic thinking partner involves fundamentally different distributions of cognitive load and depth of processing. This distinction is structurally homologous to the surface/deep processing dichotomy in active learning research (Marton & Säljö, 1976). TAB operationalises the difference as "post-use cognitive change" — a measurable, if self-reported, indicator of processing depth.

Principle 02

Is A an extension of B, or of T?

Using AI to make work faster is one thing. Using it to expand how you think is something else entirely. The first just speeds up tasks. The second opens perspectives you wouldn't have reached alone, and changes the questions you ask in the first place. Neither is wrong, but knowing the difference — and aiming for the second — is the real fork in the road.

Most people use the A-axis (AI Skills) as a B-axis extension — "work gets faster." That is not wrong, but the pivotal distinction of the AI era is whether you can use it as a T-axis extension — "the quality of thought changes." A high A is not the goal; it is the means by which T is extended.

B-subordination and T-subordination of the A-axis reflect fundamentally different theories of what a tool is. The former treats AI as an input to a production function; the latter treats it as cognitive infrastructure. In the latter register, AI functions as a medium that extends the Zone of Proximal Development (Vygotsky) — a device that connects the user, through dialogue, to regions of thought not reachable by independent effort. From this perspective, A-axis skill level is purely instrumental; what matters is the magnitude of ZPD expansion it enables, which is the actual contribution to T. The common trap — "just get better at AI" — is precisely a means-ends inversion.

Principle 03

Current locus, not fixed identity

Your result is a position on a map — where you are right now. It's not a personality type, so there's no such thing as "I'll always be this." Change your actions and your position changes too. That said, some transitions between levels aren't just about accumulating more experience — they require a genuine shift in how you think, not just how much you've done.

The result shows where you currently sit, not a fixed identity. It shifts with action. The discontinuities (A2→A3, T5→T6, etc.) signal a change in cognitive mode rather than an increase in experience.

The temptation to read TAB results as fixed identity reflects a measurement fallacy — the projection of trait-theoretic interpretation onto what is a state description, not a trait description. The discontinuities carry a specific theoretical implication: analogous to the qualitative shifts in Dreyfus's skill acquisition model (novice to expert), certain thresholds in TAB mark changes in the organising principles of cognition itself, not increments within a continuous scale. These phase transitions are not explained by linear accumulation of experience; they more closely resemble Piagetian accommodation — schema restructuring under cognitive pressure. The practical implication is that interventions designed to bridge discontinuity points are better served by qualitative metacognitive scaffolding than by quantitative feedback loops.

Principle 04

B measures whether you can evaluate AI's output

Imagine you know nothing about law and you ask AI to draft a contract. AI produces something confident-looking, but you have no way to tell if it's correct. That's B1. Being able to use AI as a tool is different from being able to judge whether its output can be trusted. If your A-axis grows without your B-axis keeping up, you look capable on the surface but you're actually in a risky position.

The B-axis asks how deeply you can judge the quality of deliverables AI generates in a given domain — a question one level more abstract than "can I do this task myself." Even at B1 (no experience) you can use AI, but at B1 you cannot tell whether its output is right or wrong. To truly wield AI, B must grow alongside A and T.

The "evaluative capacity" that the B-axis measures is epistemologically close to the capacity to adjudicate justified true belief (JTB) — to assess not just whether an output looks plausible but whether it is well-grounded. This requires not only propositional knowledge of the domain but meta-knowledge sufficient to structure the grounds for judgment. As Polanyi's tacit knowledge framework suggests, this capacity is often carried by inarticulable expert judgment — the structural recognition behind the intuition that "something is off." B-axis growth therefore means not the accumulation of facts but the internalisation of a domain's evaluative vocabulary and reasoning structure. High-A, low-B produces "competent ignorance" precisely because AI output is consumed without that vocabulary — plausibility is mistaken for correctness.

* This framework is an original model designed as an evaluation axis for HAiiA (Healthy AI Intelligence Association) certification.
